How the Face Ages

The young face has full, rounded cheeks, a defined jawline, and firm, smooth skin. Over the years, gravity, sun exposure, heredity, and stress contribute to aging of the skin and tissues of the face and neck. In addition, collagen production in the skin slows down, making the skin thinner and less elastic. Fullness under the eyes and in the mid-cheek area diminishes or descends to form nasolabial folds and jowls. For some, fat accumulates on the jawline, under the chin, and along the neck.

Facial Plastic Surgery FAQ

What questions should I ask the surgeon during my consultation?

This initial appointment is the time to determine whether a surgeon is qualified and a good fit for you. Be sure to ask:

  • How many years have you been a facial plastic surgeon?
  • What are your qualifications and board certifications?
  • How many of these procedures have you performed? How frequently?
  • What type of anesthesia do you use?
  • Where do you perform surgeries?
  • Can I look at before-and-after photos of your patients?
  • Do you use imaging technology?

For additional considerations, review some helpful FAQ from the American Board of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery (ABFPRS).

What’s the difference between a plastic surgeon and a facial plastic surgeon?

Plastic surgeons have specialized surgical training in the face, breasts, and body. They typically complete 5 years of general surgery training and 2 to 3 years of plastic surgery training on the face, breasts, and body. Facial plastic surgeons complete 5 years of medical training and additional training focused on the face, head, and neck. They have an in-depth understanding of the relationship between facial anatomy and aesthetics.

After his medical training and residency, Dr. Chaboki completed additional residency training in otolaryngology (head-neck surgery) and fellowship training in facial plastic surgery, making him highly qualified to perform a wide range of facial procedures.

Why does board certification matter?

Board certification demonstrates a physician’s dedication to their specialty and their patients. It requires accredited residency training, focused surgical experience, adherence to strict safety protocols followed by rigorous testing and evaluation and ongoing education. Certification, especially by the American Board of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, is important when choosing a facial plastic surgeon because it demonstrates a high level of expertise and a commitment to safety and excellence.

Board-certified facial plastic surgeons must earn at least two certifications:

  • First: either the American Board of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery (ABOTO) or the American Board of Plastic Surgery (ABPS)
  • Next: the American Board of Facial Plastic Surgery (ABFPRS)

When you choose a board-certified facial plastic surgeon, you are actually choosing a double board-certified surgeon who has highly specialized training and experience and focuses their practice on the complex field of facial plastic surgery.

How do I choose the best facial plastic surgeon for me?

Once you have confirmed that a facial plastic surgeon has the proper credentials, consider:

  • Rapport: Make sure you feel comfortable talking with your surgeon, trust that they will tell you what is and is not possible with surgery, and believe that they share and support your vision.
  • Environment: Consider how you feel when you are in the office. Do you feel calm and at ease? Does the staff take the time to talk with you? Does the practice run in an organized manner?
  • Patient reviews: Look online at facial plastic surgery reviews on the  surgeon’s website and sites like RealSelf, Google, and RateMDs to see what actual patients say about the surgeon you are considering.
  • Before-and-after photos: Review photos of your surgeon’s actual patients in their online photo gallery, an album in the office, or both.
