If a traditional facelift cannot address your aesthetic concerns sufficiently, a deep plane facelift may be the ideal solution for treating advanced aging symptoms and achieving the more substantial yet natural-looking facelift results you’re after.
As a leading facelift specialist in the Washington, DC metro area, Dr. Houtan Chaboki performs deep plane facelifts for patients from Arlington and Ashburn, Virginia; Bethesda and Chevy Chase, Maryland; and surrounding cities who yearn to unveil their youthful radiance.
What Is a Deep Plane Facelift?
A deep plane facelift is an advanced facelift surgery technique that repositions and tightens a deeper layer of muscles and tissues beneath the skin—the deep plane layer.
During a deep plane facelift, Dr. Chaboki lifts the skin, muscles, and SMAS (superficial musculoaponeurotic system) as a single unit for more dramatic repositioning and results. Incisions are placed discreetly around the ears and hairline and under the chin to minimize scarring. A deep plane facelift uses a comprehensive approach that addresses the cheeks, jowls, and lower face to help you look naturally younger and refreshed.
A deep plane facelift lifts the tissues of the midface, jowls, and neck as a unit, instead of separate layers. In addition, ligaments that tether the tissue are released in deep plane facelift surgery to allow for more of a lift. As a result, deep plane lifts tend to be smoother and longer lasting as compared to other facelift techniques.
Traditional Facelift vs Deep Plane Facelift
A traditional facelift uses a less invasive approach than a deep plane procedure, lifting only the skin and treating the SMAS as a separate unit. While the results can still be excellent and long-lasting, traditional facelifts are not as comprehensive.
A mid facelift, meanwhile, primarily addresses the cheeks, and a modified mini facelift is the preferred technique for patients with mild facial aging symptoms.
Who’s a Good Candidate for Deep Plane Facelift?
A deep plane facelift is more invasive than other techniques, but it delivers the transformative results that many patients with pronounced aging symptoms desire. Ideal candidates for deep plane facelifts are usually over 40 years old with the following concerns:
Deep jowls
Sagging cheeks
Pronounced nasolabial folds
Deepening marionette lines
Loose “turkey neck” or double chin
In some cases, a deep plane facelift is combined with a neck lift or brow lift for comprehensive rejuvenation of the upper, mid, and lower face. Fat transfer may also complement your facelift by adding volume to areas of the face, such as the cheeks and nasolabial folds.

Deep plane facelift results tend to last longer than other facelift techniques, especially if you follow a good skin care regimen, practice proper hydration, eat a healthy diet, and are vigilant about protecting your skin from sun exposure. However, even though the results are long-lasting, the procedure does not stop the aging process. Everyone’s face ages differently. Many patients preserve their youthful look with regular non surgical treatments such as BOTOX® Cosmetic, dermal fillers, and chemical peels.
What’s the best age for a deep plane facelift?
While patients in their 50s and 60s with more pronounced aging symptoms are usually ideal candidates for a deep plane facelift, the procedure also benefits patients in their 40s with moderate to severe sagging, drooping, or loose skin in the mid to lower face. Younger patients or those with minimal tissue laxity may be better candidates for a less invasive mini facelift.
How much younger will I look after a deep plane facelift?
All Potomac Plastic Surgery patients can expect to look naturally younger and more vibrant after having a deep plane facelift. While every patient varies due to their specific aging symptoms, facial anatomy, and other factors, most patients appear several years younger than their chronological years after a deep plane facelift. We, however, strive to have patient looking vibrant and healthy for their given age, not necessary younger per se.
What will my scars be like?
Dr. Chaboki uses a surgical technique with tiny incisions well-concealed within the ear contours and hairline. However, incisions normally appear visibly pink or puffy during initial healing. We recommend applying topical petroleum jelly to your incisions to aid healing and reduce visible scarring. Incisions continue to heal and fade over time until they are virtually imperceptible.
Dr. Chaboki specializes in facelift surgery, including revision and secondary facelifts. He will provide guidance as to the appropriate procedure based on your unique anatomy.
Does deep plane facelift improve the entire face?
Deep plane facelift addresses the midface, jowl, and neck. Supplemental procedures such as brow lift, eyelid surgery, fat transfer, and chin implant may be required to help achieve your desired results. Chemical peel during surgery can help improve skin too.
