Neck Lift in Washington, DC

A smooth, firm neck and contoured jawline contribute to an attractive, youthful appearance. A loose, sagging neckline can detract from an otherwise vibrant, healthy look, as can a double chin or excess fat on the neck. As a double board-certified facial plastic surgeon, Dr. Houtan Chaboki has extensive training and experience performing facial rejuvenation procedures. He offers neck lift surgery in Washington, DC, to help patients from Arlington and Ashburn, Virginia; Bethesda and Chevy Chase, Maryland; and surrounding cities restore definition to the jawline and tighten the neck.

How a Neck Lift Is Performed

Dr. Chaboki performs neck lift surgery using either IV (twilight) sedation or general anesthesia. He places a small incision in a natural crease under the chin and may make additional incisions behind the ears if necessary. He then tightens the neck tissue to reduce sagging or a double chin. Some patients require only liposuction to define the jawline and neck.

Recovery After Neck Lift Surgery

The immediate recovery from neck lift surgery varies, but normally takes 1 to 3 weeks. Patients wear a light neck and face bandage for a short period of time to minimize bruising and swelling.

Your Renewed Look

After your neck lift, you’ll appreciate a younger and more attractive version of yourself, without an overdone appearance. As your neck lift surgeon, Dr. Chaboki strives for safe and natural facial rejuvenation.

How Long Does a Neck Lift Last?

Neck lift surgery improvements typically last 10 to 15 years depending on skin elasticity, lifestyle, and other individual factors. Because the aging process will continue, wrinkles and sagging skin will eventually develop. You should look better than if you had not had the procedure in the first place.

Secondary neck lifts are generally considered several years after the original procedure. Additional procedures such as BOTOX, facial fillers, or laser treatments are often used to help maintain a youthful appearance. These non surgical treatments typically are started a few months after surgery.

Neck Lift FAQs

Who is a candidate for neck lift surgery?

Neck lift candidates generally have some of the following qualities, but circumstances may vary for each person:

  • Good general health
  • Over 20 years old
  • Weak, receding, or double chin
  • Excess neck skin or fat
  • Jowls or loose skin tissue along jaw line
  • Time available for recovery after surgery

As a facial plastic surgeon, Dr. Chaboki will tailor the neck lift appropriate for you. The neck lift is customized to your degree of facial aging, underlying anatomy, and most importantly your personal goals. Some patients require a limited or mini lift, while other patients would benefit from a full facelift or traditional lift. Only after a comprehensive evaluation can we help determine appropriate options for you.

Where are the incisions placed for a neck lift?

Neck lifts typically require a small incision under the chin. This chin incision is well hidden in a natural crease and is used largely to access fat in the neck for liposuction, chin augmentation, or neck muscle tightening.

Additional incisions may be made behind the ears for patients who undergo neck liposuction or a facelift. The facelift incision may be anywhere from the temple, side burns, around the ear, and/or upper neck. The incision location and length varies largely based on the age of the patient and how much lift an individual needs. Dr. Chaboki will minimize the incision but maximize the lift, without creating an unnatural appearance. The facelift incision, regardless of exact location, fades over time.

What are the different types of neck lift?

A neck lift may be performed via a chin implant, neck liposuction, or as part of a facelift.

What is the platysma?

The platysma is a thin layer or sheet of muscle in the neck. The platysma muscle sags with age and contributes to the appearance of “bands” in the central neck area. The platysma is continuous with the SMAS (superficial musculo-aponeurotic system), a layer of fat and muscle tissue just under the skin surface of the face. Modification of the SMAS is the main component of most facelift surgery, not just the skin. Long-lasting facelift results are obtained by lifting and tightening the SMAS through a variety of techniques.

Does insurance cover neck lift surgery?

Dr. Chaboki provides the finest in both cosmetic and reconstructive plastic surgery at affordable prices, and participates with most insurance plans. Plastic surgery covers a broad area of medicine, which includes both reconstructive procedures and cosmetic procedures. If your procedure is medically indicated, some portion of the cost may be covered. The office accepts insurance in applicable cases and will, if you wish, contact your insurance company to find out if your procedure will be covered. Insurance coverage varies greatly between patients; however, plastic surgery may be partially or fully covered.

Can I combine cosmetic neck lift with other facial surgery?

Yes, it’s generally preferred to combine procedures. First, by combining surgery, insurance may cover a portion of the procedure, and you may save money on fees. Secondly, tissue modified from one area may be used for another surgical area. Lastly, the recovery process following surgery would only be once, and you minimize downtime by avoiding 2 separate procedures. Procedures commonly combined with neck lift surgery include the following:

When can I resume regular exercise after neck lift surgery?

Strenuous activities or exercise after plastic surgery will increase the risk of bleeding, swelling, and bruising, until an appropriate amount of healing time has been allowed. This restriction during the recovery period varies based on the operation performed and patient’s medical condition. Light activities, such as slow walking, may be performed soon after anesthesia wears off. Heavy activity, such as aerobics, yoga, cycling, running, heavy lifting, or similar vigorous activities are allowed after 2 weeks. Contact sports are generally allowed after 6 weeks from surgery.

Will I need time off work after neck lift surgery?

Most patients plan approximately 1 to 2 weeks off from work. A longer period of recovery may be necessary for combined procedures. Many patients feel “restaurant ready” within 1 to 2 weeks.

How long is the procedure?

Surgical neck lifts vary depending on the specific needs of the patient and surgery. Neck liposuction or chin augmentation normally take less than an hour, while traditional full face lifts may take a few hours of precision surgery.

What type of anesthesia is used during neck lift surgery?

Minor surgery is normally performed with local anesthesia. Neck lift surgery is normally performed with either IV (twilight) sedation or general anesthesia at accredited facilities with a licensed anesthetist. Patients are safe and comfortable during the procedure.

Where is neck lift surgery performed?

Dr. Chaboki practices facial plastic surgery at several DC area surgical facilities to accommodate his patients. Minor procedures with local anesthesia are performed in the DC office. Surgical procedures with IV (twilight) sedation or general anesthesia are performed at accredited facilities with a licensed anesthetist.
